High-quality (Western) biomedical care is available free of charge in Niue. Emergency services and in-patient care for surgical conditions are provided at Lord Liverpool Hospital in Alofi. Patients requiring specialist care are sent by air to nearby countries.
Herbalists and traditional healers (taulaatua) are also patronised by locals. Some taulaatua deal only with minor ailments in their own village. A handful deal with major health problems all over the island. The herbs they use and the methods of preparation are secret.
