Most tourists are New Zealanders

New Zealanders, returning Niueans and people of Niuean descent visiting family are the main visitors to Niue.

Tourist numbers fell from 1400 in 2003 to 723 in 2004 due in large part to the effects of Cyclone Heta, but increased to 2800 in 2005 and 3500 in 2007.

Considerable efforts are still being made to rebuild the tourism sector following Cyclone Heta and to provide more mid-level accommodation.
