Sunshine state

The national flag of Niue is golden yellow representing the sunshine of Niue and its warm feelings towards New Zealand and its people.

The upper canton bears the Union Jack, a reminder of a British Protectorate and a symbol of protection. The four small stars represent the Southern Cross symbolizing a partnership with New Zealand. The larger star within the blue disc represents the self-governing status standing alone within the Pacific Ocean.
